Different Types of Saws for Woodworking

Backsaw:

This is the most commonly used hand saw. Normally an 8 to 14 inch long rectangular shaped blade is used for making a backsaw. It has a rib on the opposite of the cutting edge. The cutting edge contains 10 to 20 teeth per inch. It is used when precise wood cutting is required. For example, the most common operations done by backsaws are cutting tenons or grooves, dovetails, etc. A backsaw can do these operations very precisely.

Coping Saw:

A Coping saw is used for basically turning cuts on wood. This type is very useful for unusual cuts. In this saw, a blade of around 150 mm length is used as the cutting edge. Thi blade is attached to a metal frame by two clips or pins on both ends. Though you can use this saw for cutting unusual shapes, you need to practice properly for using it.

Keyhole Saw:

This hand saw is made with a long narrow and pointed blade and usually has a plastic handle. This device is used for cutting small holes or other shapes on softwoods and drywalls. It is very useful for various drywall projects. You can also use it for cutting any shape on plastic, rubber or other soft materials.

Circular Saw:

This is an electric tool that contains a circular flat blade. The blade can move in a circular motion and cut through the wood piece accurately. This type of saw can cut metal, plastic or other materials by changing the blade accordingly.

Jig Saw:

Jigsaw is mainly used for cutting curves on various materials. This tool is one of the most versatile tools that can cut wood of various shapes, sizes, thickness, and density. Not only woods, but you can also cut rubber, fiberglass, steel or drywall precisely using this device.

Miter Saw:

Miter saw is a stationary device and you can set it on a benchtop. The advantage of using it is that this device is comparatively heavy and reduces unnecessary movement of the tool during cutting. You can cut normal and compound angles with a miter saw. You can also do various DIY works and trim works by using this device.

Panel Saw:

Panel saw is a relatively lightweight cutting device. This device is used for cutting large and thin wood sheets. You can set a panel saw with specific dimensions. So various woodwork projects can be done appropriately.

Crosscut Saw:

The crosscut saw is used to cut wood perpendicularly across the wood grain. This can be made as both a hand tool or a power tool. This tool is appropriate for rough cutting tasks like cutting timber or trimming branches. So the blade used in it is comparatively thick and the blade has large teeth. You may have seen two-person crosscut saws. This is one of the most common traditional wood cutting devices. Two-person crosscut saw has two handles at both ends of the device.

Hacksaw:

A hacksaw can be used for cutting wood or metals by changing the blade accordingly. The blade is thin and wide. A U-shaped metal frame is used to hold the blade. The frame is adjustable and flexible so that you can tighten or loosen the blade according to your requirements. The handle of this device is made of wood or metal. Some hacksaws have handles on both sides for making the task more comfortable.

Fretsaw:

Fretsaw is used to shape light materials like plywood and perspex. The structure and applications coping saw and fretsaw are almost the same. The difference is that the depth of the frame of a fretsaw is longer than a coping saw. This increased depth will allow you to cut a shape distant from the edge of the material.

Conclusion

In this article, only 10 types of saws are mentioned in detail. But there are many other amazing saws for cutting different shapes like grooves, curves, etc. Hopefully, the above information will be helpful for you. By gathering more knowledge about the structure and uses of different types of saws and choosing the right one, your wood project will be more satisfying and perfect.
